Amanita bisporigera, commonly known as the Eastern Destroying Angel, is a distinct species within the section Phalloideae of the genus Amanita. It is characterized as a medium-to-large agaric with a staturesque, pure white appearance. Morphologically, it is distinguished from other white Amanitas primarily by its microscopic features; specifically, the basidia are almost exclusively two-spored (bisporigera), whereas most related species are four-spored. The species exhibits a classic Amanita development, emerging from a universal veil as a 'button' before expanding to reveal a membranous, skirt-like annulus and a distinct, sac-like volva at the base of the stem.
Native: Eastern United States, Southeastern Canada, Eastern Mexico. Endemic to North America; records of 'Amanita virosa' in North America are often misidentifications of A. bisporigera or A. elliptosperma.
