Boletus aereus, commonly known as the Bronze Bolete or Dark Cep, is a distinguished member of the Boletus edulis complex and is widely regarded as the 'Queen of Boletes' due to its superior gastronomic qualities. Morphologically, it is characterized by a dark, velvety, chocolate-brown to bronze-black cap that can appear almost black in youth, contrasting sharply with its white pores and pale, reticulated stem. Unlike its close relative Boletus edulis, B. aereus is thermophilic, thriving in warmer climates and strictly associating with broadleaf hardwoods.
Native: Southern Europe, Central Europe, Mediterranean Basin, North Africa (Morocco, Algeria). Widespread in Southern Europe but becoming rare/endangered in Northern Europe (e.g., UK, Czech Republic) due to habitat loss and climate factors. Often confused with local cryptic species in North America (e.g., Boletus regineus).
