Coprinus comatus, the type species of the genus Coprinus, is a distinctive agaric fungus in the family Agaricaceae. It is characterized by a cylindrical to bell-shaped pileus (cap) that is initially white and covered in shaggy, recurved brownish scales (squamules), remnants of the universal veil. As the fruit body matures, the gills undergo autodigestion (deliquescence), liquefying from the margin inward into a black, spore-filled fluid. This process aids in spore dispersal by dripping the 'ink' to the ground or allowing air currents to catch spores from the receding cap margin. The stipe is hollow, fibrous, and contains a unique suspended cord of hyphae running through its center.
Edibility: Choice edible. Considered a choice edible with a delicate, mild flavor and tender texture. It is best prepared by sautéing, battering and frying, or adding to soups (which it naturally thickens). It has a high water content. Crucially, it must be cooked within 4-6 hours of harvest, as the autodigestion process continues even after picking. Submerging in water or freezing (after blanching) can halt this process temporarily. Unlike the Common Ink Cap (Coprinopsis atramentaria), Coprinus comatus does NOT contain coprine and is generally safe to consume with alcohol. Safety: Harvest only young specimens with entirely white gills; discard if gills have begun turning pink or black. Avoid collecting from roadsides or polluted soil, as this species is a bioaccumulator of heavy metals (including mercury, cadmium, and arsenic) and traffic pollutants.
Habitat: Saprotrophic, thriving in nitrogen-rich, disturbed soils. Frequently found in lawns, meadows, wood chip mulch, compost piles, and along hard-packed dirt roads or paths.. Substrates: Composted manure (horse/cow), Rich garden soil, Decomposing straw, Wood chips, Disturbed ground. Conditions: Prefers cool to moderate temperatures; often fruits after autumn rains or in late spring.. Season: Primarily late summer to autumn (fall); occasionally late spring.
