Ganoderma lingzhi is the true 'Red Reishi' of East Asian traditional medicine, historically misidentified as the European species G. lucidum. It features a kidney-shaped cap with a distinct varnished, reddish-brown to reddish-orange upper surface. Unlike G. lucidum, which has a white pore surface, G. lingzhi typically exhibits a yellow pore surface that bruises brown. The flesh is corky and woody, with a bitter taste due to high triterpene content. This species is a white-rot fungus that grows annually on the base of deciduous hardwood trees, particularly oaks. In cultivation, it is highly versatile, capable of producing both the classic conk form under high oxygen conditions and the 'antler' form under high CO2 environments. It is the primary species cultivated globally for medicinal supplements.
