Hericium abietis is a distinct species native to western North America, primarily found in the Pacific Northwest. Unlike its hardwood-loving relatives, this species grows exclusively on conifer wood (firs, hemlocks, Douglas-fir). The fruiting body consists of a compact, branched mass that can grow quite large (up to 75 cm wide). It features long, cascading spines (1-2.5 cm) that hang from the branches, giving it a 'bear's head' appearance. The color is initially creamy white, turning yellowish or brownish with age.
