Hygrophorus eburneus, commonly known as the Ivory Waxy Cap or Cowboy's Handkerchief, is the type species of the genus Hygrophorus. It is a medium-sized, pure white agaric characterized by its extremely glutinous veil, which coats the entire fruiting body in a thick layer of slime during wet weather. As the mushroom matures, the cap expands from convex to plane or slightly depressed, often retaining a broad umbo. The pure white coloration may develop faint ivory or yellowish tones at the disc with age. This species is a classic 'waxy cap,' possessing thick, widely spaced, decurrent gills that have a distinctively waxy texture when rubbed.
Native: Europe, North America, North Africa. Widespread and locally common in the Holarctic region, particularly in older beech forests of Europe.
