Rhizoctonia is the type and dominant genus of the family Ceratobasidiaceae following recent taxonomic consolidation. Historically treated as a form genus for sterile mycelia, it now encompasses the teleomorphic (sexual) stages formerly known as Thanatephorus (e.g., T. cucumeris) and many species of Ceratobasidium (e.g., C. cornigerum). The genus is characterized by its distinct mycelial features and includes saprotrophs, orchid mycorrhizal symbionts, and destructive plant pathogens.
