Saproamanita is a genus proposed to accommodate saprotrophic species formerly placed in Amanita (specifically subgenus Lepidella or section Lepidella). Unlike the core Amanita species which are ectomycorrhizal symbionts, Saproamanita species are free-living decomposers found in grasslands, lawns, and open areas. This genus was erected to resolve the paraphyly of Amanita and reflect the distinct ecological and evolutionary lineage of these saprotrophic fungi.
