Zhuliangomyces is a relatively recently established genus (2019) separated from Limacella based on molecular phylogenetic evidence. It contains species that were formerly classified as 'slimy' Limacella. The genus is named in honor of the Chinese mycologist Zhu-Liang Yang for his contributions to the study of Amanitaceae. These fungi are characterized by their extremely glutinous surfaces and distinct phylogenetic placement.
