Bolbitius is the type genus of the family Bolbitiaceae. Its species are small, thin, fragile mushrooms, some of them brightly colored. Unlike most other members of the family, they typically have a glutinous or viscid cap surface when fresh, which can make them look slimy. The fruit bodies are short-lived.
The pileipellis is hymeniform (a hymenoderm) covered in a glutinous layer. Spore prints are cinnamon-brown to rusty-brown. Under a microscope, the spores are smooth and thick-walled, with a distinct germ pore. The caps are often striate or lined at the margins.
