Bolbitius is the type genus of the family Bolbitiaceae, characterized by small, fragile, and often brightly colored mushrooms. Unlike most other members of the family, species in this genus typically possess a viscid or glutinous cap surface (pileipellis) when fresh, which can make them appear slimy. They are ephemeral, often appearing rapidly after rain and deliquescing (collapsing/dissolving) quickly, similar to inkcaps, though they do not turn to black ink.
