Calvatia craniiformis is a medium-to-large puffball distinguished by its resemblance to a human brain or skull. The fruiting body typically measures 6–20 cm broad and tall, often developing a tapered, sterile base that gives it an inverted pear or skull-like shape. The outer surface is initially smooth and whitish-tan but wrinkles and folds as it matures, eventually cracking and flaking to reveal the spore mass.
Common in eastern North America, also found in Asia and Australia.
