Cantharellus cibarius, the type species of the genus Cantharellus, is a distinct ectomycorrhizal basidiomycete. The fruit bodies (basidiocarps) are characterized by their funnel-shaped to convex pileus and a hymenium formed of decurrent, forked ridges (rugae) rather than true gills. These ridges are blunt, shallow, and widely spaced, distinguishing them from the sharp, blade-like gills of true agarics. The species exhibits a vivid egg-yolk yellow to pale orange coloration due to high carotenoid content.
Native: Europe (widespread), North Africa. Historically considered cosmopolitan, but DNA analysis has revealed that North American and Asian 'Golden Chanterelles' are often distinct species (e.g., C. formosus, C. phasmatis) within the C. cibarius complex. C. cibarius sensu stricto is primarily European.
