Catatrama is a unique genus within Amanitaceae, originally described in 1991 and placed in Tricholomataceae before molecular data confirmed its placement in Amanitaceae. It is morphologically distinct from other family members, resembling a Lepiota or Echinoderma species more than a typical Amanita. It represents a rare lineage with a disjunct distribution.
