Descolea is a fascinating genus within Bolbitiaceae because it breaks the typical mold of the family. Unlike the saprotrophic Bolbitius and Conocybe, Descolea species are ectomycorrhizal. They were formerly placed in Cortinariaceae due to their warty spores but were moved to Bolbitiaceae based on DNA evidence and their cellular cap structure.
