Fistulina hepatica (Schaeff.) With. forms soft, tongue- or liver-shaped, blood-red to liver-brown brackets on oaks and sweet chestnuts. When cut, it looks remarkably like raw meat and exudes a red juice. It causes a brown rot that stains oak heartwood a rich color ('brown oak') prized by woodworkers. It is edible, with a sour, acidic taste.
