Sessile Earthstar
Geastrum saccatum, the sessile or rounded earthstar, is a small saprobic earthstar of leaf litter and humus. Its outer layer splits into five to eight rays and the stalkless spore sac lies flat on them. The pore at the top of the spore sac sits in a dull brown, ridged or depressed disc that helps separate it from similar species.
Inedible when mature; the spore sac becomes a mass of brown powder. Not a food mushroom.

Mycology is an evolving science: names, classifications and safety information change as research advances. Entries are compiled from cited sources and reviewed, but may be incomplete or out of date — check the sources, and never rely on this library alone to identify or eat a mushroom.
