3 species
A large genus of small to medium, brown-spored, ectomycorrhizal mushrooms with fibrous or silky caps. Many species contain muscarine and are poisonous; none should be eaten. In 2020 the family Inocybaceae was divided into seven genera, and most species of Inocybe in the strict sense have thick-walled pleurocystidia.
Cap: often conical to umbonate, fibrillose, silky or scaly, frequently splitting at the margin. Gills: attached, brownish at maturity. Spore print: brown. Spores: smooth, angular, nodulose or spiny. Cystidia: pleurocystidia usually present, often thick-walled. Odor: often spermatic or earthy.
