Lentinula boryana is the type species of the genus Lentinula, native to the subtropical regions of the Americas, ranging from the Gulf Coast of the United States down to South America. It is a wood-rotting saprobe that typically grows in clusters on dead hardwood logs, particularly oaks. Morphologically, it closely resembles the common Shiitake (L. edodes) but is generally smaller and adapted to warmer, more humid climates.
