Shaggy-stalked Lepiota
A slender Lepiota with a brownish, finely scaly cap and a stem that is coated below the ring zone in woolly, cottony veil material. DNA work shows that the traditional concept covers several species, including Lepiota magnispora, and the North American range of true L. clypeolaria is uncertain. It is considered poisonous. Its genus includes deadly amatoxin-containing species.
Poisonous; do not eat. Sgambelluri et al. (2014) found no amatoxins in it, but it is still regarded as toxic. Similar small Lepiotas, including L. brunneoincarnata, L. castanea, L. subincarnata (= L. josserandii) and L. helveola, contain amatoxins and have caused fatal liver failure; symptoms are delayed. No small Lepiota should ever be eaten; get emergency care after any ingestion.
