Tiger Milk Mushroom
A stalked polypore of tropical forests that grows singly from a buried, tuber-like sclerotium rather than from wood. The sclerotium is a traditional medicine in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. It has been cultivated in Malaysia, including the commercial strain TM02. The IUCN assessment treats the name as covering a species complex.
Not a culinary mushroom: the cap and stem are woody. The sclerotium is taken as powder or decoction. A 28-day rat study of cultivated TM02 sclerotium found no treatment-related toxicity up to 1,000 mg/kg/day. Human clinical evidence is scarce. It has often been mistaken for Lentinus (Pleurotus) tuber-regium, another sclerotium-forming species.

Mycology is an evolving science: names, classifications and safety information change as research advances. Entries are compiled from cited sources and reviewed, but may be incomplete or out of date — check the sources, and never rely on this library alone to identify or eat a mushroom.
