Limacellopsis is a small genus established in 2018 to accommodate species that are morphologically similar to Limacella but phylogenetically distinct. The type species, Limacellopsis guttata, was historically a well-known Limacella. The separation is based on multi-gene phylogenetic analyses which showed these species form a distinct lineage within the Amanitaceae.
