Boro dhoodh chhatu
A massive pale tricholomatoid mushroom of South Asia, with caps reaching 30-35 cm. It is collected and sold in West Bengal, eaten by the Tripuri people, and has been grown on straw with soil casing at high temperatures in India and Pakistan. Unlike true Tricholoma it is saprotrophic.
Edible; sold in West Bengal markets and usually cooked (in China mainly boiled in soups). A 2024 review advises caution with Macrocybe because some species contain cyanogenic compounds, so cook it well. The sources reviewed name no specific look-alikes, so wild collections need expert identification; cultivated material avoids this risk.
