Neoboletus was circumscribed in 2014 to contain red-pored species that lack a reticulate stipe, separating them from the 'Luridi' group (now largely Suillellus and Rubroboletus). The type species, Neoboletus luridiformis (formerly Boletus erythropus), is a well-known edible mushroom when cooked.
Features a brown to dark brown velvety cap and orange-red to red pores. The stipe is dotted with red floccules or scales (punctate) but lacks a true reticulate network. The yellow flesh stains dark blue instantly and intensely when cut. The spores are smooth and olive-brown.
