Pholiotina was historically treated as a subgenus of Conocybe but is now widely recognized as a distinct genus based on molecular phylogenetics and morphological differences. These mushrooms are generally small and fragile, resembling Conocybe, but often possess a partial veil that leaves a ring (annulus) on the stem or fragments on the cap margin.
