Indian Oyster, Italian Oyster, Lung Oyster, Phoenix Mushroom
1 public strain
The Indian, Italian or lung oyster, very similar and closely related to P. ostreatus but with paler, smaller caps, more of a stem, and a warm-weather season (late spring through summer). It is a widely cultivated white-rot fungus of temperate and subtropical forests.
Edible and commercially cultivated; taste much like P. ostreatus. Wild oyster-like mushrooms can be confused with poisonous Clitocybe species and other toxic look-alikes (Omphalotus, Lentinellus), so confirm decurrent gills, growth on wood and a white-lilac spore print.
Never eat a wild mushroom based on a web page — confirm with an expert.
Mycology is an evolving science: names, classifications and safety information change as research advances. Entries are compiled from cited sources and reviewed, but may be incomplete or out of date — check the sources, and never rely on this library alone to identify or eat a mushroom.
