Polyporus umbellatus (Pers.) Fr. forms a large, many-branched fruit body of dozens to hundreds of small, round, centrally stalked caps from a common base, arising from an underground sclerotium near hardwood roots (often oak). The sclerotium is the medicinal 'Zhu Ling' of traditional Chinese medicine. Some authorities place the species in Cladomeris as C. umbellata.
Temperate Northern Hemisphere (Europe, Asia, North America); uncommon to rare in many regions.
