Gray Bolete
A gray to grayish-brown bolete of eastern oak-hickory forests. It has whitish to brownish-gray pores and a stem covered by a coarse, wide-meshed net. The stem turns chrome yellow from the base upward and the net darkens with age. It is edible.
Edible (Horn's Boletes). Look-alikes listed by Wikipedia include Retiboletus vinaceipes, Tylopilus griseocarneus, T. variobrunneus and Leccinum albellum. Horn notes larval tunnels in the flesh, so check specimens for insect damage.
