Schizophyllum commune Fr. is found on dead wood on every continent except Antarctica. Its small, whitish, hairy fans have pinkish-grey gill folds that split lengthwise; these curl over in dry weather and reopen when rehydrated, letting it survive repeated drying. It is eaten widely in parts of Africa, Southeast Asia and Latin America, is cultivated in some regions, and is a key model organism (tens of thousands of mating types).
