Old Man of the Woods
2 species
Strobilomyces is a widely recognized and morphologically distinct genus of boletes. Older systems placed it in its own family (Strobilomycetaceae), but phylogenetic evidence places it within the Boletaceae. Known as 'Old Man of the Woods', these fungi have a shaggy appearance unlike typical smooth-capped boletes.
The cap is covered in coarse, dark grey to black woolly scales. The pore surface is initially white/grey, darkening with age. The flesh typically stains red/pink when cut, eventually turning black. The spores are roughly spherical (globose to subglobose) and prominently ornamented; in S. strobilaceus the ornament is a mesh-like (reticulate) network. The spore print is black.
