Velvet Roll-rim
A large, brown, gilled member of the bolete order that grows from conifer stumps and roots. It is recognized by its thick, dark brown, velvety stem attached off-center and its rolled cap margin. Formerly placed in Paxillus.
Not edible; treated here as a suspected gastrointestinal irritant. The flesh is bitter or acrid. Sources disagree: most call it inedible, some list it as poisonous or indigestible, and it is reportedly eaten in parts of eastern Europe only after boiling and discarding the water. Do not eat.
