Xerochrysium was established in 2013 to accommodate xerophilic species previously classified in the polyphyletic genus Chrysosporium. These fungi are adapted to environments with very low water availability and are phylogenetically distinct from the Onygenales (where true Chrysosporium belongs), placing them instead within the Eurotiales/Aspergillaceae.
