Pig's ears
3 species
A genus of saprobic lorchels (Discinaceae) whose spring fruitbodies range from sessile brown cups and discs (pig's ears such as D. ancilis and D. perlata) to the large lobed or brain-like false morels D. brunnea and D. caroliniana. Long treated within Gyromitra; generic limits are still in flux, and some authors place the false-morel species in Neogyromitra.
Fruit body: sessile to short-stalked cup or disc, or saddle- to brain-shaped on a stout, often ribbed stem; fertile surface brown to reddish brown, underside whitish. Spores: large, ellipsoid to fusoid, with oil drops, often apiculate or becoming ornamented. Ecology: saprobic (possibly also mycorrhizal in some species), in spring on soil or near rotting wood.
