Saccobolus is a prominent genus within the Ascobolaceae, distinguished primarily by its unique spore arrangement. Like Ascobolus, it is largely coprophilous and produces small, often yellowish or violet apothecia. The genus was separated from Ascobolus by Boudier in 1869 to accommodate species where spores remain clustered together after discharge.
