Thecotheus is a genus characterized by its cylindrical to barrel-shaped apothecia and complex spore morphology. While historically sometimes confused with Ascophanus, it is now a well-defined genus. Species are often found on dung but also occur on rotting wood, plant debris, and urea-treated soils. The genus is noted for its polysporous species (asci containing more than 8 spores) in addition to 8-spored ones.
Asci are operculate and often stain diffusely blue in iodine (amyloid), a feature less common or distinct in other Ascobolaceae. Ascospores are usually hyaline (colorless) to pale brown and frequently possess distinct polar apiculi (caps) or thick gelatinous sheaths. Some species produce asci with 32 or more spores.
