Fusarium venenatum Nirenberg is the filamentous fungus used to produce mycoprotein (marketed as Quorn), grown by continuous submerged fermentation on glucose with a nitrogen source and harvested as protein-rich mycelium. The production strain (A3/5) was isolated from soil in the UK in the 1960s and was originally identified as F. graminearum. It is one of the most commercially significant cultivated fungi by biomass.
