Corn Smut Genus
1 species
A small genus of smut fungi in the Ustilaginaceae, resurrected by McTaggart et al. (2016) for corn smut (formerly Ustilago maydis) and a few close relatives that form swollen (hypertrophied), tubular sori on grasses. Ustilago in the old broad sense is polyphyletic, and molecular analyses placed these species apart from it.
Plant pathogens of grasses (Poaceae) forming hypertrophied, gall-like or tubular sori filled with dark teliospores; yeast-like sporidial stage in culture.
