American Gray Dust Lepidella
A small to medium Lepidella whose white cap is covered with a gray powdery veil that forms soft powdery warts. The cap margin carries overhanging veil remnants and the stem base roots into the soil. It has a chlorine-like odor and grows under oaks and pines in the eastern United States; documented records in the sources consulted are mainly from Texas. It is poorly documented in popular literature, so microscopic and DNA checks are needed for confident identification.
Edibility unknown; do not eat. It belongs to section Lepidella, which includes poisonous species. Gray Amanitas can be confused with other gray Lepidellas and with deadly species; any white or gray Amanita with a ring, warts or volva should be treated as potentially lethal (amatoxin-containing destroying angels and death caps occur in the same habitats).
