A striking eastern North American butter bolete with a pinkish-purple to dark purplish-red cap, lemon-yellow pores and a bright yellow netted stem. All parts stain dark blue when cut or bruised. It was described in 2000 and moved to Butyriboletus in 2015. Its separation from Boletus speciosus is still unresolved on ITS data.
Edibility is not documented in the sources reviewed; not recommended. It stains dark blue and tastes very sour, and it can be confused with other red- or purple-capped, blue-staining boletes whose edibility varies.

Mycology is an evolving science: names, classifications and safety information change as research advances. Entries are compiled from cited sources and reviewed, but may be incomplete or out of date — check the sources, and never rely on this library alone to identify or eat a mushroom.
