Sculpted Puffball
A pear- to egg-shaped western montane puffball covered in large, pyramidal or polygonal white warts that give it a carved appearance. It grows in coniferous forest duff at middle to high elevations. The interior is white and firm when young and becomes olive-brown and powdery with age.
Edible when young and still firm and pure white inside; some authors rate it highly, while older specimens may taste unpleasant. Always slice specimens top to bottom: the immature buttons of Amanita magniverrucata (possibly toxic) can look similar from outside but show a developing cap, gills and stem in section.
