Smooth Chanterelle
Cantharellus lateritius, the smooth chanterelle, is an orange-yellow chanterelle of eastern North American hardwood forests. Its fertile undersurface is smooth or only shallowly wrinkled instead of having well-formed ridges. It is ectomycorrhizal with oaks and smells strongly of apricots.
Edible and often considered choice, though some rate it below the golden chanterelle. Rule out the poisonous eastern jack-o'-lantern (Omphalotus illudens: sharp true gills, large clusters on wood or buried roots). Craterellus odoratus is similar but has thinner flesh and a hollow stem.
