Conocybe is a large genus of small, delicate mushrooms with conical or bell-shaped caps and slender, fragile stems. They are common in grassy areas and are among the 'LBMs' (Little Brown Mushrooms). Many are harmless saprotrophs, but the genus contains species with deadly amatoxins and others containing psilocybin, so identification is critical.
Distinguished microscopically by the presence of lecythiform (capitate) cheilocystidia, which resemble bowling pins with a distinct round head. The cap surface is dry (non-viscid) and cellular (hymeniform). Spores are smooth, thick-walled, and have a germ pore, producing a rusty-brown spore print.
