A small, bright orange to orange-yellow funnel chanterelle of damp, mossy eastern hardwood forests. The cap becomes perforated and vase-shaped, the stem is hollow, and the blunt false gills turn pinkish to lavender with age. It is an edible species.
Edible (Wikipedia). Similar species (C. tubaeformis, C. lutescens, Cantharellus minor) are edible, but orange gilled mushrooms such as Omphalotus and Hygrophoropsis must be excluded by checking for blunt false gills and a hollow stem.
