A small wood-decaying gilled mushroom with saw-toothed gill edges, a centrally depressed cap and a short brownish stem. The name Lentinellus omphalodes has been applied to the same mushrooms and is listed by Index Fungorum as a synonym. MushroomExpert treats L. micheneri as a group of at least three cryptic species (micheneri, subaustralis and flabelliformis) separated by mating studies rather than by field characters.
Inedible. Lentinellus species are considered unfit to eat because of their bitter or acrid taste.
