Sordid Blewit, Lesser Blewit
Lepista sordida (Schumach.) Singer is a smaller, thinner-fleshed relative of the wood blewit (L. nuda), with lilac to lilac-brown caps that fade with age. It grows in rich, disturbed soil, compost, gardens and grassland edges. It has attracted cultivation interest in China, and it is the subject of studies on 'fairy chemicals' that stimulate plant growth.
Edible when well cooked. Some people react to blewits raw or undercooked. Spore print (pinkish) helps separate from Cortinarius (rusty brown).
