Lycoperdon is the type genus of the former family Lycoperdaceae, now widely classified within Agaricaceae based on DNA evidence. These are small to medium-sized puffballs commonly found in forests. They are distinct from Calvatia in that they release spores through a defined apical pore (ostiole) rather than the disintegration of the upper peridium.
