Lycoperdon is the type genus of the family Lycoperdaceae, which some classifications merge into Agaricaceae on DNA evidence. These are small to medium-sized puffballs of woods, grassland and decaying wood. They differ from Calvatia in releasing spores through a defined apical pore (ostiole) rather than by breakup of the upper peridium.
Pear-shaped or globose fruit bodies, often with a sterile base. The exoperidium (outer skin) is often covered in spines, warts, or granules that may rub off. Spores are released via a 'bellows' mechanism through a small hole at the top when hit by raindrops.
