Mottlegills
3 species
Small, slender, mostly dung- and grass-inhabiting mushrooms with mottled gills and dark brown to black spore prints. Some species, such as P. cinctulus, contain psilocybin. A 2026 study places the genus in Galeropsidaceae, separate from Bolbitiaceae, with Panaeolina as a subgenus.
Cap: conic to bell-shaped, often hygrophanous. Gills: attached, mottled as spores mature. Stem: slender, fragile, usually without a ring (P. semiovatus is the exception). Spore print: dark brown to black.
