Shaggy Scalycap
Pholiota squarrosa (Vahl) P. Kumm. forms dense clusters at the bases of living and dead trees, with dry, straw-yellow caps and stems densely covered in upturned, rusty-brown scales. It is a common, conspicuous fungus of hardwoods and conifers across the Northern Hemisphere and a weak parasite causing butt rot. It is the dry-capped lookalike frequently compared with the cultivated P. adiposa and with Armillaria.
Not recommended. Reported to cause gastrointestinal upset, especially when consumed with alcohol; some people tolerate it, but it is generally treated as inedible.
