Sharp-scaly Pholiota
A clustered Pholiota of hardwood logs and living trees with a whitish to cinnamon-buff cap bristling with erect, pointed tawny scales. It closely resembles Pholiota squarrosa but has a sticky cap between the scales, no greenish gill stage, no garlic odor and smaller spores.
Not recommended. Some sources call it edible, but it is easily confused with Pholiota squarrosa, which has been reported to cause severe gastrointestinal upset. Mature specimens of the two are reliably separated only by spore size.
