3 species
A large genus of small to medium, fragile, mostly brown saprobic mushrooms with dark brown to purplish black spore prints. Molecular studies since 2015 have split off several genera (for example Candolleomyces, Typhrasa and parts of Coprinopsis), and many species can only be identified microscopically.
Cap: usually hygrophanous, brown fading paler, often with veil remnants. Gills: attached, brown to dark brown. Stem: white, brittle, hollow. Spore print: dark brown to purplish black.
