Common Stump Brittlestem
A brown, fragile gilled mushroom that grows in small to large clusters on hardwood stumps, logs and woody debris. Young caps have a band of white veil tissue along the margin, and the cap fades from reddish or honey brown to dull tan as it dries. Field features suggest the species, but confirmation requires a microscope.
Edibility is not documented in the sources consulted; not recommended. Brown mushrooms clustered on stumps include the deadly Galerina marginata (amatoxins; rusty brown spore print, often a ring) and toxic Hypholoma fasciculare (yellow to greenish gills, purple-brown spore print).
